OASIS SKATEBOARD FACTORY (School / SK8 & Street Art Design Services) is looking for creative youth to join our STUDENT DESIGN TEAM for Semester 2!
-Are you 16-19 years of age and wanting to be reengaged in school by doing real-world projects in the community?

OASIS SKATEBOARD FACTORY POP-UP SHOP
(Toronto Design Offsite Festival)
Opening Party: Friday, January 25, 7:00 - 9:00 PM
Come
out and support the Oasis Skateboard Factory (OSF), Toronto’s innovative and
award-winning skateboard design and street art focused alternative high school
reengagement program! At OSF students earn all their credits by running an
entrepreneurial business where they learn hands-on to build skateboards, design
original custom graphics, work with local artists and community partners,
market and display their work and receive financial remuneration.
The
OSF POP-UP SHOP is the culminating project in a business course developed by
OSF in partnership with The Baitshop, Toronto’s premiere
screen-printing/skate shop and gallery. The OSF/Baitshop Business Program is
designed to help youth earn credits and develop transferable creative,
employment and entrepreneurial skills.
At
the opening party students will be selling their hand-made skateboards and
longbords with custom graphics, as well as having a sample sale of their street
wear logo T-shirts and other products to launch their personal company brands.
To give back to the community, a portion of the sales of Oasis Skateboard
Factory merchandise will be donated to a local charity. This free public event,
catered by Glory Hole Doughnuts, is presented by The Baitshop as
part of the Toronto Design Offsite Festival and will feature OSF design
collaborations with Local Designers, Roarockit Skateboard Company,
Longboard Living and Concrete Wave Magazine.

Sakie x Flatface Fingerboards
When Mike Schneider (owner of Flatface Fingerboards) first asked me to do this board for him, he just gave me complete artistic freedom. I was so excited about this opportunity that I couldn't decide what kind of graphic to do at first, although he did want it to be wood burned. I decided that the board had to have my artist name, Sakie, on it so I put it on the tail of the board. I knew that I had to put the Flatface logo on it as well, you can see it at the nose of the board. The I 3 U cat face is one of my favorite characters that I have drawn and I have included it in many of my other pieces. I thought it would be appropriate, and I wrote Flatface in my style and font underneath. All of the wood burning was done by hand with a professional wood burning tool. I am really happy with the way this board came out. Thanks again Mike.
"High End" Kid Skwid Custom
I’m 18 years old. For the longest time I struggled in school and discovered that I was good at woodworking and visual arts, hence my decision to go to Oasis. My art is greatly influenced by people I meet abroad and artists that come to Toronto from around the world. The biggest influences on my art have been my grade 9 art teacher Mrs. Bond and Joachim Lau (AKA Slurg, a guest artist at OSF).
Lately, I’ve been experimenting with mini boards as you can see by looking at the dream deck I created with mentoring by Ted Hunter of Roarockit. It’s a classy mini cruiser with elements and attributes derived from popular 35-42” symmetrical freeride boards, scaled down and fun yet still high end. There are no graphics, just custom veneer work and grip, burned leather and stitching. Very classy.
The idea to go "high end" was brought on by a lot of the fancy cars that I saw on my way from London-Gatwick airport to the Cotswalds last summer and by a long talk that I had with a new friend along the way. We spoke about the idea of luxury skateboards and the potential market that could be created. I was also influenced by the recent popularity of smaller plastic cruisers, and the lack of versatility they provide. I think I brought two worlds together by creating a cruiser with the look of luxury and functionality of a full sized deck in a miniature form.

I’m eighteen years old and enjoy eating pizza. My inspiration for my first skateboard graphic comes from my friends who own companies that contribute to local skateboarding. The three logos are a "T" for Tangent Apparel, SkateLoft which is an indoor skatepark located in East York, and finally a shield which is used as a logo for Direct Wheel Co. With this graphic I am trying to show people that all three companies collaborated to make this board because the owners off these companies are all friends of mine.
The materials I used to design this graphic were spray paint, tape stencils and a trusty number 2 pencil.
Something I learned from making this board and designing a graphic is that it is way harder than it looks! It definitely takes determination and imagination to do this job.
The Snot Rocket
Hey, I’ve been going to Oasis Skateboard Factory
for about a semester now. I found out about it through a former student last year, when I also started skating so I thought why
not? My favorite thing about OSF is that it is filled with opportunities. The
first custom board I made was a custom-shaped mini-cruiser which no previous student got
to do as their first board: an amazing opportunity on its own!
My skateboard is an Ed Roth, Rat Fink, old hot rod style piece. The
custom mini shape of the board is chopped like a hot rod itself with a flame on the
nose, and the wacky fuzzy booger is the grimy adrenaline-crazed character that
every Ed Roth graphic has. The board is made of 7-ply Canadian maple
and pressed using Roarockit’s trademarked vacuum technology. It was shaped
using a jigsaw and hand painted with paint-marker and spray paint.
I’m quite
satisfied with how my board ended up and I’m currently debating whether or not to
skate it. As for what I learned.... paint-marker fixes everything!
