My first board...

I am a 20 year old student at Oasis Skateboard Factory. I'm also an inspired tattoo artist. The theme I chose for my skateboard graphic was a cartoon clown followed with words that I live by and flowers to represent the beauty of life. The reason why I used clowns: most people are afraid of clowns from a young age and I wanted to reverse that message into an art form.

My inspiration branched from L.A. style clowns and text that is mainly used in Mr.Cartoon's tattoos. Kat Von D is also an inspiration to me. In the near future I want to progress my style and expand it with unique and greyscale animation. Some of my personal interests are tattooing; over the years I will learn the key fundamentals to being an impactful tattoo artist.

The materials I used were 7 layers of veneer, wood glue, a Roarockit vacuum seal bag and different sandpapers. The techniques I used were stencils made from acetate and an x-acto blade. Each of the colors that are used on my board were a step by step process
that took planning and preparation. Elements and Principles of Design I used were the value in different shades of pink on the female clown; I wanted the lips and flower in her hair to be a more darker color to make it look realistic. Texture was used in the sanded background to make the wood look old and worn down.

Working on my first board was a challenge but gave me the fundamentals used to make your own personal board. I've also learned that preparation is key when making your own custom deck because if you rush yourself you later have to backtrack in steps that could jeopardize your paint, surface and your durability of your skateboard.

After OSF I want to start my own custom skateshop where boards can be made for all ages and subcultures.

OSF x Roarockit Product Testing Class Results

OSF x Roarockit Product Testing Results
In collaboration with Roarockit, Oasis Skateboard Factory students constructed three boards for testing. Each board was made from a single kind of wood species, Birch, Maple and Bamboo. All boards had the same shape in order to make testing consistent. Thanks to a donation from CJ Skatepark, students were able to spend the day skating all three boards to find out potential strengths and flaws. After a long and fun day of product testing we were able to create a list of results ranging from the scientific (deflection, torsion, stress) to the fun (pop & feel).

Birch

Deflection
Board felt stiff & stable
Good bounce back
Felt comfortable on the half-pipe

Torsion
Very Stiff
Board shape greatly effects board stiffness

Wear
Snapped quickly

Pop
Average pop compared to regular boards
Felt a bit “off”
Great potential for more pop with a different shape

Feel
Stiff
Weird but O.K.
Difficult to get used to
light

Trucks
If board is to light, won’t flip properly

Maple

Deflection
Pretty durable and strong
Dent resistant

Torsion
Just the right amount of flex

Wear
Graphics stayed intact

Pop
Really nice pop,
felt decently light

Feel
different shape may feel more comfortable

Trucks
Held together tightly

Bamboo

Deflection
Hardly any (dent) damage
Superior material
High wear resistance
Good spring

Torsion
Maple veneers in board took away from flex,
Improves or takes away (from performance) based on riders perspective

Wear
Withstands pressure of use

Pop
Amazing amounts of pop
Didn’t need to get used to it.

Feel
Needs different shape and size
Very solid

Trucks
Difficult to flip because of shape

Happy client Bannockburn Montessori picks up tees our students helped their kids design: OSF Screenprint Services and Community Outreach

Great work OSF / TDSB Student Leaders for sharing a passion for art and design with younger kids in our community! - OSF Teachers

Message from the Bannockburn Teacher:
The kids were thrilled with the t-shirts!
What an exceptional programme OSF is! The benefits to its immediate students are obvious and measurable, but its outreach extends far beyond its walls. For the past three years, our students at Bannockburn Montessori have had the privilege of working with the talented and committed students of OSF.  With their help and guidance, we have built skateboards, painted two giant murals for our school walls and designed and silkscreened our own t-shirts. We have also learnt about the dedication and hard work it takes to be an artist. We have learnt that art doesn’t have to be hanging in a gilded frame in a gallery to be worthy of consideration. This innovative programme should be expanded so it can continue to benefit both its students and the educational community as a whole.
